About
Nemirna, which means ‘restless’, is the artist name of Mishka Góra, an Australian writer and photographer based in Hobart, Tasmania. Mishka has been taking photographs all her life but only in recent years has shared the results with the greater public. Her primary vocation is as a wife and mother, and her photography is a reflection of this perspective.
Mishka enjoys photographing all manner of subjects, but tends to specialise in portraits as well as pastoral and coastal scenes. Much of her work gives the impression of being painted rather than photographed, and Mishka is always keen to capture the underlying mood of a scene rather than produce a strict visual duplicate. She is fascinated by how traces of the past linger in the present and hopes that, like a good book, her photos inspire the imagination rather than dictate every little detail.
She does not manipulate her photographs using software such as Photoshop. However, she has found the use of HDR (High Dynamic Range) to take advantage of multiple exposures to be of great benefit in making the camera see as the eye does or to produce a painting-like effect.
Her first exhibited work was a collection of scenes from war-ravaged Croatia. These acted as a follow-up to a stint as an aid worker during the 1990’s conflict. Subsequent sales have confirmed her interest in portraits – including houses, children and pets! – and general scenery. She also has an ongoing commitment to taking photographs for historical swordsmanship manuals, such as Stephen Hand’s English Swordsmanship
